How NRI Status Works for Seafarers
Under Section 6 of the Income Tax Act, 1961, an individual is treated as a Resident in India if they are present for 182 days or more during the financial year (April 1 – March 31).
For Indian seafarers (crew on Indian ships), the threshold is also 182 days — days spent on a ship outside India count as days outside India. The standard 60-day rule does not apply to seafarers on Indian ships.
- Less than 182 days in India → Non-Resident Indian (NRI) — foreign income is tax-free
- 182 days or more in India → Resident — worldwide income may be taxable
