🧠 Key Concepts
VSEPR Theory and Molecular Shapes
Repulsion between valence electron pairs determines molecular geometry. Remember that lone pair-lone pair repulsion is stronger than lone pair-bond pair, which is stronger than bond pair-bond pair.
Hybridization Shortcut
Count the number of sigma bonds plus the number of lone pairs on the central atom. If the sum is 2 it is sp, 3 is sp^2, 4 is sp^3, 5 is sp^3d, and 6 is sp^3d^2.
Molecular Orbital Theory (MOT)
For diatomic molecules of the second period, write the electronic configuration to find Bond Order as 0.5 * (Nb - Na). Remember that higher bond order means shorter bond length and greater stability.
Fajans' Rules
Smaller cations and larger anions have higher polarizing power, which increases covalent character in an ionic bond. High covalent character means lower melting point and lower solubility in water.
