The 9-Step Counselling Process

1

Register at imu.cbexams.com

Visit the official IMU counselling portal at imu.cbexams.com and register using your IMU CET 2026 roll number, date of birth, and a valid email address. Create your counselling login credentials carefully — you will need them throughout the process.

⚠️

Pay the ₹10,000 counselling registration fee via net banking or debit card. This fee is completely non-refundable — even if you do not receive a seat in any round.

💡

Complete registration immediately. Deadlines are extremely tight — often just 2–3 days after results are declared.

2

Fill Your Programme & Campus Choices

Log in to the counselling portal and fill your choices — select specific Programme + Campus combinations in your preferred order. You can fill as many combinations as you want. Choice order matters: your highest-priority option should be listed first.

Strategy: Fill broadly. Narrow down only if you get a strong Round 1 allotment.

💡

Fill every campus where you have even a slim chance. Include Borderline options too — seat allotment happens over multiple rounds and seats vacate. Never leave choices unfilled.

3

Round 1 — Seat Allotment

IMU runs the allotment algorithm based on your rank, category, and choice order. Results are published on the portal on the announced date. You will receive an allotment letter if a seat is available matching your rank and choices.

💡

Do not panic if you get your 3rd or 4th choice in Round 1. You can upgrade in subsequent rounds.

4

Accept Your Seat (If Allotted)

If you receive a Round 1 allotment, log in and accept the seat within the deadline (usually 24–48 hours). Then pay the programme fee (varies by campus and programme — typically ₹50,000–₹1,50,000 for the first instalment) to confirm your seat.

⚠️

Missing the acceptance deadline forfeits your allotment. The seat is released back to the next candidate. There is no grace period.

💡

Keep your net banking / debit card ready well in advance. Bank portals can be slow during peak counselling days.

5

Round 2 — Upgrades & Fresh Allotments

Seats vacated by candidates who did not accept Round 1 allotments, plus remaining unallotted seats, are re-pooled for Round 2. If you accepted a Round 1 seat, you can still participate in Round 2 with a chance to upgrade to a better option. You may modify your choice order twice during the Round 2 window.

💡

If you got DNS in Round 1 but wanted B.Tech, participate in Round 2 — many seats open up as candidates who get better options in Round 2 vacate their Round 1 seats.

6

Round 3 + Spot Round

Further rounds are conducted until all seats are filled. A final Spot Round may be held at IMU campuses in-person for remaining seats. This is the last opportunity for candidates who did not receive a seat in online rounds.

Spot Round is conducted physically at IMU campuses. Check official notices for venue and date.

7

Report to Allotted Campus — Document Verification

After final allotment and fee payment, you must report to your allotted IMU campus on the specified date for in-person document verification. Bring all original documents plus self-attested copies. Failure to report forfeits your admission.

💡

Use our Document Checklist to ensure you have everything ready before you travel.

8

DGS Medical Fitness Examination

All admitted candidates must obtain a medical fitness certificate from a DGS-approved doctor (not any general physician). The examination covers vision (with or without correction), colour blindness, hearing, physical fitness, and overall health. This is mandatory under Merchant Shipping Act requirements.

⚠️

Colour blindness is a disqualifying condition for the navigation stream (DNS, B.Sc NS). For Marine Engineering (B.Tech ME), corrected vision is acceptable up to specified limits. Verify exact requirements with your campus.

💡

Book your medical appointment early — DGS-approved doctors have limited slots and high demand during the joining season.

9

Join Your Institute

On joining day, report to your institute with your admission letter, medical certificate, original documents, and other required items. DNS candidates must also carry their sponsorship letter from their shipping company. You are now officially a maritime cadet.

DNS students: Your sponsorship letter is mandatory for joining. Confirm with your sponsoring company that the letter is ready well before joining date.

Counselling Strategy Tips

🎯

Never fill only one choice. Even if you want only one specific campus, fill at least 5–6 options. Unfilled choices cannot be reconsidered later.

Accept and pay immediately after Round 1 allotment. The acceptance window is usually just 48 hours. Missing it means losing your seat permanently.

🔄

Accepting a Round 1 seat does NOT block you from Round 2. You can still participate and upgrade if a better option opens.

🏛️

Apply to affiliated institutes in parallel. Their deadlines are independent of IMU counselling. You can always withdraw from one if you get a better option from the other.

🚢

DNS aspirants: Start your sponsorship company applications immediately — before or alongside counselling. A sponsorship letter dramatically improves your chances and is mandatory for joining.

💊

Book your DGS medical appointment now. Approved doctors have limited slots. Do not wait for final allotment — by then slots are gone.
