India Cuts Logistics Costs by a Third Through Infrastructure Overhaul

31 May 2026

PM Gati Shakti, dedicated freight corridors and port modernisation are slashing supply chain costs, with more gains targeted under the National Logistics Policy India has achieved a near-one-third reduction in logistics costs through a sustained infrastructure investment drive, according to industry

India has successfully reduced national logistics costs by approximately one-third, driven by the strategic implementation of the PM Gati Shakti initiative and the expansion of dedicated freight corridors. Major maritime hubs like Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and Mundra Port are witnessing enhanced efficiency through rapid infrastructure modernization. These systemic improvements, aimed at streamlining supply chain operations, are critical for Indian merchant navy vessels, including bulk carriers and container ships, as they navigate faster turnaround times and improved cargo handling capabilities across domestic terminals.

This infrastructure overhaul aligns with the operational mandates stipulated under SOLAS Chapter XI-2 and the ISPS Code, which govern port facility security and vessel-port interface efficiency. Compliance departments must ensure that vessel documentation, including the Ship Security Plan and updated voyage logs, remains synchronized with the digitized logistics frameworks now active at major Indian ports. Furthermore, adherence to MARPOL Annex VI requirements remains essential during these accelerated port stays, as classification societies like IRS and DNV strictly monitor emission standards during high-frequency cargo operations at modernized berths.

For navigating officers and masters, these logistical gains necessitate a heightened focus on precise arrival scheduling and digital berth coordination. Navigating officers must now integrate real-time port data into their bridge resource management to optimize vessel speed and fuel consumption during approach. Masters should prioritize seamless communication with port authorities to leverage the new automated clearance systems, ensuring that all regulatory filings are completed well in advance to avoid delays in this increasingly efficient maritime environment.
