Why flawless steering cannot save a wrong course

15 May 2026

Every extra mile and every idle hour in port is a ‘carbon tax’ that a vessel pays with its annual rating. While the industry focuses on engine efficiency, the real battle for the CII rating is won or lost in the chartering office, where the ship’s trajectory is decided long before the engine starts,

The maritime industry is shifting its focus toward Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) compliance, as highlighted by recent analysis from Splash 247. Every unnecessary nautical mile sailed and every idle hour spent at ports like Singapore or Rotterdam acts as a hidden carbon tax on a vessel’s annual rating. While technical teams prioritize engine efficiency, the true battle for environmental performance is won in the chartering office, where voyage planning and vessel trajectory are determined long before the main engine starts.

Under the IMO’s MARPOL Annex VI, Regulation 28, the mandatory CII rating system requires ships to maintain strict operational efficiency to avoid poor grades. This regulation, enforced alongside the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), mandates that vessels demonstrate continuous improvement in their carbon footprint. Compliance departments must now integrate these environmental metrics into their voyage optimization software. Failure to align chartering strategies with these IMO requirements can lead to downgraded ratings, impacting commercial viability and potential regulatory intervention by Port State Control authorities globally.

Navigating officers and masters must now prioritize voyage optimization over traditional speed-based scheduling to preserve their vessel's CII rating. These officers are responsible for monitoring real-time fuel consumption data and adjusting routes to minimize idle time at anchorages. By proactively communicating with charterers regarding speed adjustments and port arrival windows, deck officers can directly influence the ship's annual carbon performance, ensuring the vessel remains compliant with increasingly stringent international environmental standards and operational efficiency targets.
