The offshore division of Singapore-based Thong Yong Group has officially placed an order for two new multipurpose offshore supply vessels (OSVs) with Jianglong Shipbuilding in China. Valued at approximately $18.4 million, this strategic investment aims to bolster the company’s regional fleet capacity. The vessels are scheduled for delivery in September and December 2027, respectively. These new builds will be constructed to rigorous American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) standards, ensuring high-performance capabilities for complex offshore operations in Asian waters.
These new OSVs must strictly adhere to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines, specifically complying with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Chapter II-1 regarding construction and structural integrity. Furthermore, the vessels will be required to meet MARPOL Annex VI standards for air pollution prevention and energy efficiency design index (EEDI) requirements. Compliance departments must ensure that all onboard machinery and safety systems align with these international regulatory frameworks to maintain valid class certification and ensure seamless operational deployment across international maritime jurisdictions.
This fleet expansion directly impacts the professional requirements for masters and navigating officers who will command these technologically advanced units. These officers must familiarize themselves with the specific ABS-certified bridge systems and dynamic positioning (DP) controls integrated into the new builds. Additionally, chief engineers and second engineers should prepare for specialized training on the modern propulsion systems and environmental compliance monitoring equipment installed to meet the latest international maritime safety and emission standards upon vessel delivery.
