Norwegian offshore vessel owner DOF has agreed to sell one of its cable-laying vessels to South Korean cable maker Taihan Cable & Solution. The 2016-built cable layer Skandi Connector will be the second cable layer in Taihan’s fleet and South Korea overall, alongside the 2010-built Palos. According
Norwegian offshore giant DOF has officially confirmed the sale of its 2016-built cable-laying vessel, Skandi Connector, to the South Korean firm Taihan Cable & Solution. This strategic acquisition marks a significant expansion for the South Korean offshore sector, as the Skandi Connector becomes only the second specialized cable layer in the nation’s fleet, joining the 2010-built Palos. The transaction highlights the growing demand for subsea infrastructure assets as global energy companies accelerate offshore wind farm developments and international subsea power grid connectivity.
The transfer of ownership for such specialized tonnage necessitates strict adherence to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards, particularly regarding SOLAS Chapter XI-1 on special measures to enhance maritime safety. Compliance departments must ensure the vessel maintains its classification society requirements, as mandated by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), during the flag state transition. Furthermore, the vessel must remain fully compliant with MARPOL Annex VI regarding air pollution prevention and energy efficiency standards, ensuring that all technical documentation and safety management systems align with the new owner’s operational protocols.
For navigating officers and chief engineers, this transition involves a rigorous handover process focused on specialized cable-laying equipment and dynamic positioning systems. These rank groups must prioritize familiarization with the vessel’s specific automation software and safety management procedures under the new ownership. Ensuring a seamless integration of maintenance records and technical logs is essential for maintaining operational continuity and safety standards during the vessel’s upcoming deployment in the competitive South Korean offshore cable installation market.
