SRC Group and Energy Transfer Partner to Deliver Cost-Efficient Marine Heat Pump Solutions
21 May 2026
SRC Group has formed a strategic partnership with Energy Transfer to offer shipowners the high-efficiency, fully electric heat pump solutions that cut capital expenditure, operating costs and the financial impact of reducing ship emissions. Substantially less expensive to buy than other technologies
SRC Group and Energy Transfer have announced a strategic partnership to deploy advanced marine heat pump technology, aiming to significantly reduce capital expenditure and operational costs for shipowners. By providing fully electric, high-efficiency heating solutions, the collaboration addresses the urgent need for cost-effective decarbonization across the global merchant fleet. As maritime operators seek alternatives to traditional boiler systems, this technology offers a scalable path to lowering the financial impact of ship emissions while maintaining peak performance in diverse maritime environments.
The adoption of these heat pump systems aligns with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) MARPOL Annex VI regulations, which mandate strict limits on greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency design indices (EEDI). Furthermore, compliance with SOLAS Chapter II-1 regarding machinery and electrical installations remains paramount for classification societies like DNV or Lloyd’s Register. By integrating these electric solutions, vessel operators can better navigate the tightening requirements of the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), ensuring long-term regulatory compliance and operational sustainability.
Chief engineers and second engineers must prioritize familiarization with these electric heat pump systems as they become standard in modern engine rooms. These technical officers will need to oversee the integration of electrical heating controls, replacing traditional steam-based thermal management. Mastering the maintenance and monitoring of these energy-efficient units is essential for optimizing fuel consumption and ensuring that engine room operations remain compliant with evolving environmental standards during port state control inspections.
