U.S. Warns Ships Ignoring Orders in Hormuz May Be Treated as Threats

29 May 2026

Commercial vessels operating in and around the Strait of Hormuz face the risk of being treated as hostile targets if they fail to comply with U.S. military instructions, according to...

The U.S. Fifth Fleet has issued a stern advisory warning that commercial vessels ignoring bridge-to-bridge communication or failing to comply with military instructions in the Strait of Hormuz risk being classified as hostile threats. This directive follows a series of maritime security incidents involving tankers like the Niovi and Advantage Sweet. As tensions rise in this critical chokepoint near the port of Fujairah, merchant ships must maintain heightened vigilance and adhere strictly to naval guidance to avoid potential kinetic engagement.

Operational compliance in high-risk areas is governed by the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, specifically Part A, Section 16, which mandates strict adherence to security levels set by coastal authorities. Furthermore, under SOLAS Chapter XI-2, masters are obligated to maintain continuous communication with regional maritime security centers. Failure to comply with these international regulations not only jeopardizes the safety of the crew and cargo but also complicates insurance coverage and classification society requirements, potentially leading to detention or severe legal repercussions for shipping companies.

For masters and navigating officers, this situation necessitates an immediate review of bridge watchkeeping procedures and communication protocols. Navigating officers must ensure that all VHF channels are monitored continuously and that military queries are answered promptly to avoid misidentification. Masters should update their vessel’s Ship Security Plan to include specific contingency measures for the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring the entire bridge team is briefed on the risks of non-compliance with U.S. naval directives.
