India To Build One Of The World’s Deepest Gas Pipelines Worth $4.8 Billion To Secure Energy Supplies From Gulf

India is planning to build a $4.8 billion deep-sea gas pipeline, which will connect Oman directly to the country’s Gujarat coast.
India has unveiled an ambitious $4.8 billion deep-sea gas pipeline project designed to link Oman directly to the Gujarat coast, marking a significant shift in regional energy infrastructure. This subsea engineering feat aims to bolster energy security by bypassing traditional tanker routes. The project will involve specialized pipe-laying vessels like the Solitaire and Audacia to navigate the Arabian Sea floor. By connecting the port of Gujarat to Gulf reserves, India seeks to stabilize domestic gas supplies and reduce long-term logistics costs.
The construction and maintenance of such deep-sea infrastructure must strictly adhere to the IMO’s International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Chapter V regarding navigation safety and the protection of subsea assets. Furthermore, operations must comply with MARPOL Annex I regulations to prevent pollution during the installation phase. Classification societies like DNV or Lloyd’s Register will oversee structural integrity standards, ensuring that all subsea pipeline segments meet rigorous international safety protocols. Compliance departments must ensure that all support vessels maintain updated safety management systems under the ISM Code.
This massive infrastructure project will primarily impact the operational requirements for masters and navigating officers. These professionals must remain vigilant regarding updated Notices to Mariners and restricted navigation zones established around the pipeline route to avoid anchor damage. Navigating officers will need to integrate new exclusion coordinates into ECDIS systems to ensure safe passage. Maintaining precise situational awareness near the Gujarat coastline is essential to prevent costly subsea cable and pipeline strikes during the installation and commissioning phases.
