CMB.TECH increases stake in TFG Marine

27 May 2026

Belgian shipowner CMB.TECH has increased its shareholding in Trafigura-backed TFG Marine and committed to sourcing its bunker fuel requirements through the company. Under the revised shareholder arrangements, effective from June 1, CMB.TECH will increase its equity stake in TFG Marine from 10% to 15

Belgian shipowner CMB.TECH has officially increased its equity stake in TFG Marine from 10% to 15%, effective June 1. This strategic move strengthens the partnership between the two entities, with CMB.TECH committing to source its global bunker fuel requirements exclusively through TFG Marine. As the maritime industry transitions toward greener energy, this consolidation of supply chains aims to streamline bunkering operations for CMB.TECH’s diverse fleet, ensuring consistent access to traditional fuels and emerging low-carbon alternatives across major international bunkering hubs.

This shift in procurement strategy aligns with the stringent requirements of MARPOL Annex VI, which mandates strict limits on sulfur content in fuel oil to reduce air pollution from ships. Compliance departments must ensure that all bunker delivery notes and fuel samples are meticulously documented to satisfy Port State Control inspections under the IMO 2020 regulation. Furthermore, as the industry moves toward the decarbonization targets set by the IMO Greenhouse Gas Strategy, the selection of reliable bunkering partners becomes critical for maintaining accurate carbon intensity indicator (CII) ratings and long-term regulatory compliance.

For chief engineers and second engineers, this development necessitates a heightened focus on fuel management and quality control during bunkering operations. These officers must ensure that all fuel received from TFG Marine is properly sampled, tested, and recorded in the Oil Record Book to maintain strict adherence to environmental standards. Engine room teams should prepare for potential variations in fuel characteristics as the fleet transitions to more sustainable energy sources, requiring precise monitoring of fuel treatment systems.
