GTT receives an order from Samsung Heavy Industries for the tank design of a new floating storage and regasification unit

13 May 2026

GTT announces that it has received, in the second quarter of 2026, an order from the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard for the tank design of a new Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU), on behalf of Malaysian ship-owner MISC. This order reflects MISC’s continued development in the LNG[1]

GTT has officially secured a contract from Samsung Heavy Industries to provide advanced tank design services for a new Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU). Commissioned by the Malaysian ship-owner MISC, this project highlights the growing global demand for flexible LNG infrastructure. The design, scheduled for the second quarter of 2026, will utilize GTT’s specialized membrane containment technology, ensuring optimal thermal efficiency and safety for liquefied natural gas storage during complex offshore regasification operations in international waters.

The integration of FSRU technology requires strict adherence to the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code) and SOLAS Chapter II-2 regarding fire protection and detection. Furthermore, these units must comply with MARPOL Annex VI regulations concerning air pollution and emission control standards. Classification societies, such as DNV or ABS, mandate rigorous structural integrity assessments for membrane tanks to ensure compliance with international safety management systems, directly impacting the operational protocols and maintenance schedules for technical departments onboard.

This technological advancement directly impacts chief engineers and second engineers responsible for the maintenance of cryogenic systems. These officers must familiarize themselves with the latest membrane containment monitoring protocols and the specific safety requirements for FSRU regasification modules. Maintaining proficiency in LNG handling systems and understanding the specific classification society requirements for these specialized tanks is essential for ensuring vessel compliance and operational safety during high-stakes offshore energy transfer operations.
