V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port Authority in Thoothukudi has launched a transformative green initiative, signing strategic agreements to establish a 1 MTPA green ammonia facility and initiate methanol bunkering infrastructure. In collaboration with Bureau Veritas, the port aims to achieve net-zero emissions, positioning itself as a pivotal hub for sustainable maritime logistics in India. This development aligns with global decarbonization trends, ensuring that vessels calling at VOC Port can access cleaner alternative fuels, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of international shipping operations.

This transition is heavily influenced by the IMO’s Initial Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships and the mandatory requirements under MARPOL Annex VI, which regulates air pollution from vessels. Compliance departments must now align vessel operations with the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) frameworks. Furthermore, the handling of ammonia and methanol requires strict adherence to the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code), ensuring that bunkering procedures meet rigorous safety standards set by classification societies.

Chief engineers and second engineers must prepare for a shift in fuel management systems as methanol and ammonia bunkering become standard at VOC Port. These engine room officers need to undergo specialized training regarding the chemical properties, toxicity risks, and handling protocols of these alternative fuels. Understanding the technical requirements of the IGF Code is now essential for maintaining vessel compliance and ensuring the safety of the crew during bunkering operations in the evolving Indian maritime landscape.
