Korean shipbuilders win 10 LNG carriers as North America fuels orders

20 May 2026

Korea’s three shipbuilders have won orders for 10 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers so far this month, extending their streak in high value-added ship types. South Korea’s major shipbuilders, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hanwha Ocean, have secured orders for 10 high-value LNG carriers this month. Driven by surging North American LNG export projects, shipping companies are aggressively locking in delivery slots for 2029 and 2030 to meet global energy demand. These advanced vessels, featuring cutting-edge dual-fuel propulsion systems, represent a significant expansion in the global fleet, reinforcing Korea’s dominant position in the specialized gas carrier market amid rising international trade.

The construction and operation of these modern LNG carriers must strictly adhere to the IMO’s International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code). Furthermore, compliance with MARPOL Annex VI regarding nitrogen oxide (NOx) and sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions is mandatory for these new builds. Classification societies like DNV or ABS ensure that these vessels meet SOLAS Chapter II-2 requirements for fire protection and detection, which is critical for safety management systems and operational compliance departments overseeing sophisticated cryogenic cargo containment technologies.

This surge in LNG carrier orders directly impacts the career prospects for chief engineers and second engineers. These officers must prioritize obtaining specialized training in membrane-type cargo containment systems and high-pressure dual-fuel engine maintenance. As these vessels enter service, technical teams will need to master the latest automation and boil-off gas management systems. Staying updated with the latest IGC Code amendments is essential for those aiming to secure senior technical roles on these high-tech, high-value assets.
