India is preparing to monetise 28 national highway assets covering over 1,800 kilometres in FY27, aiming to raise approximately ₹35,000 crore through strategic asset recycling mechanisms. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a strategic plan to monetise 28 national highway assets spanning 1,800 kilometres in FY27, targeting a revenue infusion of ₹35,000 crore. This infrastructure recycling initiative, focused on stretches in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, is critical for enhancing the logistics efficiency of Indian ports like JNPT and Mundra. By streamlining road connectivity, the government aims to reduce the turnaround time for heavy-duty vehicles transporting containerised cargo to major maritime gateways.
Improved road infrastructure directly complements the logistical requirements mandated under the IMO’s Facilitation (FAL) Convention, which seeks to streamline port-to-hinterland cargo movement. While SOLAS Chapter XI-2 and the ISPS Code focus on port security, the efficiency of the land-side supply chain is governed by national logistics policies that impact vessel turnaround times. Compliance departments must monitor these infrastructure developments as they influence port congestion metrics, directly affecting the operational efficiency of vessels calling at Indian ports and the overall adherence to MARPOL Annex VI emission reduction targets.
Navigating officers and masters should note that improved highway connectivity will likely lead to higher throughput at major ports, necessitating tighter scheduling and precise arrival windows. As road-to-port logistics become more efficient, navigating officers must ensure that vessel arrival data is accurately transmitted to port authorities to avoid anchorage delays. Staying informed about these infrastructure upgrades allows for better voyage planning and ensures that vessel operations remain aligned with the increased cargo handling pace at Indian maritime terminals.
