IMO adopts first global Code for autonomous ships

22 May 2026

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has officially adopted the first global Code for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), marking a historic milestone for the shipping industry. This non-mandatory goal-based instrument provides a robust framework for the safe operation of autonomous vessels, addressing critical safety, security, and environmental protection standards. By establishing uniform international requirements, the IMO aims to harmonize the integration of automated technologies across global trade routes, ensuring that unmanned ships operate with the same rigor as traditional merchant vessels.

This regulatory breakthrough centers on the MASS Code, which functions as a foundational layer for existing international conventions, including SOLAS Chapter V regarding navigation safety and MARPOL requirements for pollution prevention. Compliance departments must now align vessel management systems with these new goal-based standards, ensuring that autonomous functions do not compromise structural integrity or emergency response protocols. Classification societies are expected to update their rules to reflect these IMO guidelines, forcing shipowners to integrate advanced remote-control monitoring and cybersecurity safeguards into their operational manuals to maintain valid certification.

For masters and navigating officers, this shift necessitates a transition from direct manual control to high-level system oversight and remote intervention management. These professionals must now prioritize proficiency in human-machine interface monitoring and diagnostic analysis. Rather than traditional bridge watchkeeping, they will focus on managing autonomous navigation algorithms and emergency override procedures, requiring updated training certifications to remain compliant with the evolving operational requirements dictated by the new global MASS framework.
