Scan Global expands book-and-claim agreement with Hapag-Lloyd

Danish logistics provider Scan Global Logistics (SGL) will continue using Hapag-Lloyd’s book-and-claim system to reduce CO2 emissions linked to its shipping operations. SGL first joined Hapag-Lloyd’s low-emission shipping programme in 2024. The latest agreement expands that partnership, an SGL spoke
Danish logistics giant Scan Global Logistics (SGL) has officially expanded its book-and-claim agreement with Hapag-Lloyd to accelerate the decarbonization of global maritime supply chains. Building on their initial 2024 partnership, this initiative allows SGL to utilize Hapag-Lloyd’s low-emission shipping program to reduce Scope 3 CO2 emissions. By decoupling the environmental benefit of using biofuels from the physical cargo flow, SGL continues its commitment to sustainable freight forwarding across major international trade routes served by Hapag-Lloyd’s modern container vessel fleet.
This strategic expansion aligns with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) 2023 strategy on the reduction of GHG emissions from ships, which mandates a transition toward net-zero fuels. Compliance departments must monitor how these book-and-claim mechanisms integrate with MARPOL Annex VI requirements regarding fuel oil quality and emissions monitoring. As the industry moves toward stricter Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) ratings and the FuelEU Maritime regulation, such voluntary programs provide a verified framework for logistics providers to document environmental performance without requiring immediate fleet-wide retrofitting of existing container vessels.
For navigating officers and masters, this shift signifies a growing emphasis on precise fuel consumption reporting and bunkering documentation. While the book-and-claim system operates primarily at the corporate level, deck officers must ensure that all bunker delivery notes and fuel quality records remain strictly compliant with international standards. Accurate data logging is essential, as these emissions reports directly influence the environmental metrics that shipping companies now use to justify their operational efficiency to global logistics partners.
