Premier Alliance to drop Algeciras calls in Asia-N Europe restructure

Lead Premier Alliance partner ONE said the changes to the FE1 and FE3 services would result in “providing direct access

The Premier Alliance, led by Ocean Network Express (ONE), has officially announced a strategic restructuring of its Asia-North Europe trade routes, specifically impacting the FE1 and FE3 services. As part of this network optimization, the alliance will discontinue two weekly calls at the Spanish transhipment hub of Algeciras. This shift aims to streamline transit times and improve schedule reliability for container vessels operating on these high-volume routes, reflecting broader adjustments within global liner shipping alliances currently reshaping their port rotations.

Operational changes of this magnitude require strict adherence to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines regarding voyage planning under SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 34. Compliance departments must ensure that updated passage plans account for revised bunkering schedules and fuel consumption patterns resulting from the Algeciras omission. Furthermore, under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006, Title 2, operators must ensure that these route modifications do not adversely affect crew rest hours or exceed maximum periods of service on board during extended transit legs between Asia and Northern Europe.

Navigating officers and masters must immediately update their Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) to reflect the removal of Algeciras from the FE1 and FE3 port rotations. It is critical to verify that updated voyage plans are signed off by the bridge team before departure. Masters should also monitor fuel management protocols closely, as the change in port calls may necessitate adjustments to speed profiles and bunker inventory planning to maintain compliance with environmental efficiency requirements.
