The Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub has released a pivotal report, Building the Sustainable Maritime Fuel Transition, identifying strategic infrastructure hubs essential for scaling green energy. By prioritizing investment in specific export gateways, the maritime industry can accelerate the global uptake of sustainable fuels. This research provides a roadmap for vessel operators to navigate the transition away from traditional heavy fuel oil, ensuring that future bunkering infrastructure aligns with the operational requirements of modern merchant fleets across major international trade routes.
This transition is deeply intertwined with the IMO’s 2023 Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships, which mandates net-zero targets by or around 2050. Compliance departments must monitor how these infrastructure developments align with MARPOL Annex VI, specifically regarding the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI). As classification societies like Lloyd’s Register update their rules for alternative fuel bunkering, vessels must ensure that fuel management systems and storage protocols strictly adhere to the latest SOLAS Chapter II-2 fire safety regulations.
Chief engineers and second engineers will face the most significant operational shifts as these sustainable fuels enter the supply chain. These officers must prepare for advanced training in handling low-flashpoint fuels and managing complex bunkering procedures at new green hubs. Understanding the chemical properties and safety protocols of ammonia, methanol, or hydrogen is now essential for maintaining engine room compliance and ensuring safe vessel operations under evolving international maritime standards.
