Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has officially finalized a 25-year terminal operator agreement with Ukwanda LNG to construct a major onshore regasification facility at the Port of Ngqura. Valued at ZAR 22bn, this $1.35bn infrastructure project aims to transform the South African port into a critical energy hub for LNG carriers. By facilitating the import and processing of liquefied natural gas, the development supports the global maritime transition toward cleaner bunker fuels and regional energy security objectives.
The development of the Ngqura LNG terminal necessitates strict adherence to the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code) and MARPOL Annex VI regulations regarding emissions. Compliance departments must ensure that LNG-fueled vessels calling at the terminal meet the safety standards outlined in SOLAS Chapter II-1, Part G. Furthermore, classification society requirements for gas-handling operations will be paramount, as the facility must integrate seamlessly with the existing port safety management systems and international maritime gas handling protocols.
This infrastructure shift will directly impact chief engineers and second engineers operating LNG-powered or gas-carrying vessels. These officers must familiarize themselves with the Port of Ngqura’s specific bunkering procedures and gas-transfer safety protocols. It is essential for engine room personnel to undergo updated training on cryogenic cargo handling and emergency shutdown systems to ensure full compliance with terminal-specific requirements during future port calls at this strategic South African energy gateway.
