Gujarat-based frozen food major HyFun Foods has officially launched India’s first dedicated reefer rail corridor for frozen potato exports, marking a pivotal shift from traditional road haulage to rail logistics. In partnership with Adani Logistics Ltd and Evergreen Marine Corp, this initiative optimizes the cold chain supply process for shipments destined for international markets. By integrating rail transport with port operations, the move enhances efficiency for refrigerated containers arriving at major hubs like Mundra Port, ensuring temperature-sensitive cargo integrity.
This transition to rail-based reefer logistics necessitates strict adherence to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code and the specific temperature monitoring requirements mandated under SOLAS Chapter VI, Regulation 2. For compliance departments, ensuring that reefer units maintain consistent power supply during intermodal transfers is critical to meeting the standards set by classification societies like IRS or DNV. Furthermore, alignment with MARPOL Annex VI regarding emissions reduction remains a priority as the industry shifts toward rail to lower the carbon footprint of maritime export supply chains.
For navigating officers and masters, this operational change requires updated cargo manifest protocols and improved coordination with terminal operators to track reefer connectivity status upon arrival at the port. Navigating officers must ensure that the transition from rail to vessel power is seamless to prevent temperature fluctuations. Masters should verify that all reefer container data is accurately logged in the vessel’s cargo plan to comply with international safety standards and prevent potential spoilage during the voyage.
