Hong Kong owner Wah Kwong Maritime Transport has placed an order for two 114,000 dwt LR2 tankers at China State Shipbuilding Corporation-affiliated Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC), with options for two additional vessels, as the company pushes ahead with fleet renewal and future-fuel readines
Hong Kong-based Wah Kwong Maritime Transport has officially expanded its fleet by ordering two 114,000 dwt LR2 tankers from the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC), a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation. This strategic investment includes options for two additional vessels, signaling a robust commitment to fleet renewal. By focusing on LR2 tanker specifications, Wah Kwong aims to enhance its future-fuel readiness, ensuring these newbuilds remain competitive within the global energy transportation market and evolving trade routes.
These newbuilds must strictly adhere to the IMO’s MARPOL Annex VI regulations regarding energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions. Compliance with the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) is mandatory for these tankers to operate in international waters. Furthermore, the vessels must meet SOLAS Chapter II-1 requirements for construction and machinery, ensuring high safety standards. Classification societies will oversee these builds to verify that the integration of alternative fuel systems aligns with the latest international maritime safety protocols and environmental mandates.
For chief engineers and second engineers, this order signifies a shift toward advanced propulsion systems and dual-fuel technology. These officers must prepare for rigorous training on new electronic engine management systems and fuel handling protocols required for future-fuel compliance. Understanding the technical nuances of these modern LR2 tankers is essential for maintaining efficient operations and ensuring that onboard machinery remains fully compliant with updated international maritime environmental standards during their upcoming sea service contracts.
