Oil and gas prices to remain high in Europe at least until the end of 2027, officials say

27 May 2026

European Union officials said that Europeans can expect oil and gas prices to remain above what they were before the Iran war for at least until the end of 2027, with prices of other goods also following an upward trajectory. EU Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis said that higher energy prices

European Union officials have confirmed that oil and gas prices will remain elevated through 2027, significantly impacting global shipping routes and bunkering costs. This sustained inflationary pressure, linked to geopolitical instability, affects major hubs like the Port of Rotterdam and the Port of Antwerp. For tanker operators such as Euronav and Frontline, managing fuel consumption for VLCCs and Suezmax vessels has become critical. As energy costs rise, the maritime industry faces increased operational overheads that threaten profit margins across international trade lanes.

The surge in energy costs necessitates strict adherence to the IMO’s MARPOL Annex VI regulations, specifically regarding the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII). Compliance departments must ensure that vessels remain within the required rating thresholds to avoid penalties from classification societies like DNV or Lloyd’s Register. Furthermore, SOLAS Chapter II-1 requirements regarding machinery and electrical installations must be meticulously maintained to optimize fuel efficiency, as inefficient operations under current market conditions risk severe regulatory non-compliance and potential port state control detentions.

Chief engineers and second engineers must prioritize fuel management and engine performance monitoring to mitigate rising operational expenses. These rank groups should focus on optimizing fuel consumption through precise combustion control and regular maintenance of auxiliary machinery. By closely monitoring bunker quality and adhering to strict fuel-saving protocols, engineering teams can help vessel operators navigate this period of high energy costs while ensuring that all onboard systems remain fully compliant with stringent international maritime emission standards.
