The Global Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres Network (GMN) Phase II workshop, held at the World Maritime University in Malmö from 6 to 8 May 2026, prioritized translating climate ambitions into actionable maritime decarbonization strategies. Discussions centered on bridging the financing gap and fostering international partnerships to accelerate the adoption of green technologies. As the industry faces mounting pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, this gathering highlighted the critical role of technological innovation in achieving net-zero targets across global shipping lanes.

These decarbonization efforts are directly linked to the stringent requirements of MARPOL Annex VI, which mandates strict limits on sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. Compliance departments must now align vessel operations with the IMO’s Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) frameworks. Failure to adhere to these evolving international standards poses significant risks to vessel chartering and operational viability. Consequently, ship managers are increasingly prioritizing retrofits and fuel-efficient propulsion systems to ensure long-term regulatory compliance and avoid potential port state control detentions.

Chief engineers and second engineers will face the most significant operational shifts as new energy-efficient technologies are integrated into engine room systems. These officers must master the operation of alternative fuel bunkering, advanced emission monitoring sensors, and energy management software. Staying updated on these technical advancements is essential for maintaining vessel efficiency and ensuring that engine room logs meet the rigorous documentation standards required by current environmental regulations and classification society audits.
