The maritime industry has officially launched CO2TIME 2026, a specialized time charter party contract designed to govern the transport of liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2). As global carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) projects expand, this standardized framework provides essential legal clarity for shipping companies operating specialized gas carriers. By establishing uniform terms for LCO2 logistics, the industry aims to streamline operations between major industrial hubs and sequestration sites, ensuring that vessel owners and charterers maintain consistent contractual obligations.

This development aligns with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulatory landscape, specifically addressing the safety requirements outlined in the IGC Code (International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk). Compliance departments must ensure that operational procedures adhere to the standards set by classification societies like DNV or Lloyd’s Register regarding cargo containment and pressure management. Furthermore, the handling of LCO2 must strictly follow MARPOL Annex II and SOLAS Chapter VII regulations to mitigate risks associated with asphyxiation and cargo leakage during transit.

Chief engineers and second engineers will face the most significant operational shifts under these new charter terms. These rank groups must prioritize advanced training in cryogenic cargo handling and pressure monitoring systems specific to LCO2 carriers. It is imperative that engine department personnel review the updated safety management systems and cargo transfer protocols to ensure full compliance with the CO2TIME 2026 framework during all loading and discharge operations at port terminals.
