New Type Of Floating Wave Energy Converter Deployed At Biscay Platform For Testing & Research
18 May 2026

A new kind of prototype wave energy converter, developed by Spain-based IDOM has been deployed at the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (BiMEP).
Spain-based engineering firm IDOM has successfully deployed its innovative prototype wave energy converter at the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (BiMEP) for extensive sea trials. This floating device aims to harness kinetic energy from ocean swells, marking a significant milestone in renewable maritime technology. By utilizing the harsh conditions of the Bay of Biscay, the project seeks to validate structural integrity and power generation efficiency, providing critical data for future offshore energy integration within the global merchant navy infrastructure.
The deployment of such offshore energy structures necessitates strict adherence to international maritime safety standards, particularly regarding navigational hazards and environmental protection. Under SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 34, operators must ensure that all offshore installations are correctly charted and marked to prevent collisions. Furthermore, compliance with MARPOL Annex I regarding potential oil leakage from hydraulic systems is essential. Classification societies like DNV or Lloyd’s Register are increasingly involved in certifying these converters to ensure they do not interfere with established shipping lanes or vessel traffic services.
Chief engineers and navigating officers must stay informed about these evolving offshore energy zones to ensure safe passage. Navigating officers should proactively update their ECDIS units to reflect new exclusion zones around the BiMEP site to avoid potential hazards. Meanwhile, chief engineers should monitor developments in wave energy integration, as these systems may eventually influence auxiliary power requirements and electrical load management protocols for future hybrid-powered commercial vessels operating in European coastal waters.
