Coal demand in April rises in line with our expectations
13 May 2026
The war in Iran and subsequent constriction of energy commodity flows appear to have been supportive of coal demand, as flows in April rise y/y for only the second time in 2026 so far. Global seaborne coal flows increased by 6% y/y in April 2026. Coal flows to China and India decreased by over 13% .
Global seaborne coal trade witnessed a notable 6% year-on-year increase in April 2026, defying earlier market volatility linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran. While major importers like China and India reported a 13% decline in coal arrivals, the broader market remains resilient due to shifting energy commodity flows. Bulk carriers, including Capesize and Panamax vessels, continue to navigate these changing trade routes as energy security concerns drive demand, marking only the second monthly growth period for coal shipments this year.
Operational compliance remains critical as vessels adjust to these shifting trade patterns under the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code. Masters must ensure strict adherence to SOLAS Chapter VI, which governs the safe carriage of cargoes, particularly regarding moisture limits and liquefaction risks inherent in coal transport. Furthermore, compliance departments must monitor MARPOL Annex VI requirements for sulfur emissions, as increased transit times and route deviations impact fuel consumption reporting and the overall carbon intensity indicator (CII) ratings for older bulk carrier tonnage.
Navigating officers and masters must prioritize rigorous cargo monitoring and hold ventilation procedures to mitigate spontaneous combustion risks during extended voyages. With fluctuating demand impacting port turnaround times, deck officers should focus on precise ballast management and stability calculations to maintain vessel safety. Staying updated on regional port state control requirements is essential for navigating officers to ensure seamless operations and avoid detention during these periods of high-stakes commodity logistics and evolving global trade flow patterns.
