Biofuel Bunker Snapshot: POMEME barge price drop limits Rotterdam B30-VLSFO price gain

11 May 2026

Rotterdam and Europe Rotterdam’s B30-VLSFO (POMEME) price has increased by $35/mt in the last week. The port’s conventional VLSFO price rise has been over twice as steep, at $74/mt. Rotterdam’s B30-VLSFO (POMEME) prices rose by $35/mt this week, significantly trailing the $74/mt surge seen in conventional VLSFO. According to data from Prima Markets, the ARA POMEME barge price dropped by $13/mt, indicating a cooling in biofuel feedstock costs. This divergence in pricing highlights shifting market dynamics at the Port of Rotterdam, a critical hub for global shipping. As the industry transitions toward decarbonization, these price fluctuations directly impact the operational expenditure of vessels bunkering in Northern Europe.

The adoption of biofuel blends like B30 is increasingly driven by the IMO’s Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). Compliance with MARPOL Annex VI, which mandates strict sulfur limits, remains paramount for vessels operating in Emission Control Areas. Furthermore, classification society requirements regarding fuel quality and engine compatibility under SOLAS Chapter II-2 must be meticulously managed. Compliance departments must ensure that biofuel procurement aligns with sustainability reporting standards to avoid penalties and maintain the vessel’s operational efficiency rating.

Chief engineers and second engineers must prioritize fuel system monitoring when transitioning to B30 blends. These engine room officers need to conduct regular fuel oil analysis to detect potential microbial growth or stability issues associated with biofuels. It is essential to maintain detailed records of fuel quality and consumption to support the vessel’s compliance documentation. Staying updated on bunker quality reports is critical to preventing engine performance degradation and ensuring seamless operations during port calls in Rotterdam.
