Let’s focus on the fact that shipping companies are greener than their reputation

27 May 2026

If you only follow the headlines in the media, you could easily get the impression that the green transition of shipping has stalled. Fortunately, this is not the case. Admittedly, the negotiations at the IMO in 2025 ended without the breakthrough many had hoped for, because the countries could not

Contrary to mainstream media narratives suggesting a stalled green transition, the global shipping industry is actively decarbonizing beyond recent headlines. While the 2025 IMO negotiations faced setbacks regarding global carbon pricing, major shipping lines like Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd continue integrating dual-fuel vessels, such as the Laura Maersk, into their fleets. These initiatives, supported by bunkering infrastructure at ports like Singapore and Rotterdam, demonstrate that maritime operators are prioritizing sustainable technology investments despite the lack of immediate international regulatory consensus.

Compliance with MARPOL Annex VI remains the primary driver for these operational shifts, specifically regarding the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) framework. For technical departments, adhering to these standards is no longer optional; it requires rigorous monitoring of fuel consumption and engine performance data. Classification societies like DNV and ABS are enforcing stricter oversight, mandating that vessels maintain specific efficiency ratings to avoid port state control detentions and ensure continued access to major global trade routes under evolving environmental mandates.

Chief engineers and second engineers must now prioritize advanced fuel management systems and emissions monitoring as part of their daily routine. These rank groups need to master the handling of alternative fuels like methanol and ammonia, ensuring that engine room operations align with updated safety protocols. Staying informed on these technical shifts is essential for career progression, as the demand for officers skilled in operating low-carbon propulsion systems continues to rise across the international merchant fleet.
