Industry-First Three-Tank LNG Carriers To Boost Cargo Capacity And Lower Emissions
22 May 2026

This new design will equip four new buildings: two vessels already ordered in November 2025 and two additional vessels ordered in May 2026.
The maritime industry is witnessing a technological shift with the introduction of industry-first three-tank LNG carriers designed to maximize cargo capacity while significantly lowering carbon emissions. This innovative design will be integrated into four new builds, following initial orders placed in November 2025 and subsequent contracts finalized in May 2026. By optimizing internal tank geometry, these vessels aim to enhance volumetric efficiency, setting a new benchmark for sustainable gas transportation and operational performance in the global energy supply chain.
These LNG carriers must strictly adhere to the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk, known as the IGC Code, to ensure safe containment and cargo handling. Compliance with MARPOL Annex VI remains critical, as these vessels utilize advanced dual-fuel propulsion systems to meet tightening EEDI and CII requirements. Classification societies are enforcing rigorous structural integrity standards under SOLAS Chapter II-2, ensuring that the three-tank configuration maintains optimal safety margins during loading and discharge operations at major international LNG terminals.
Chief engineers and second engineers will face significant changes in cargo management and fuel system maintenance protocols. These officers must undergo specialized training to handle the unique pressure-balancing requirements of the three-tank layout. Mastery of the integrated boil-off gas management systems is essential for maintaining compliance and operational efficiency. Furthermore, engine ratings must familiarize themselves with the updated automated monitoring interfaces to ensure the vessel remains within the strict emission parameters mandated by current environmental regulations.
