GAC has officially announced the deployment of a new floating crane at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata, effective 14 May 2026. This critical infrastructure upgrade is designed to enhance cargo handling efficiency for containers, dry bulk, and breakbulk shipments. The floating crane will also facilitate essential lightening and topping-up operations, significantly reducing vessel turnaround times. Concurrently, port authorities in Hong Kong have initiated a temporary closure of landing steps No. 1 and No. 2, impacting local maritime logistics.
The deployment of heavy-lift floating cranes must strictly adhere to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines regarding safe cargo handling and the Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing (CSS Code). Compliance departments must ensure that all operations align with SOLAS Chapter VI, which governs the carriage of cargoes. Furthermore, the use of such equipment requires rigorous adherence to classification society standards for lifting appliances to prevent structural failures or accidents during ship-to-ship transfers, ensuring full regulatory compliance during port calls.
Masters and navigating officers must prioritize safety protocols when coordinating with the new floating crane at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port. These officers need to update their passage plans and verify that mooring arrangements are compatible with the crane's operational radius. Navigating officers should also monitor local notices to mariners regarding the Hong Kong landing step closures to adjust crew transfer schedules accordingly, ensuring that all vessel operations remain compliant with port safety requirements and local maritime traffic regulations.
