The global liner shipping industry is witnessing a massive capital shift, with investments in dual-fuel vessels now exceeding $180 billion. According to recent data, the combined fleet of dual-fuel containerships and vehicle carriers has surpassed 1,200 units, either delivered or currently on order. Major carriers like Maersk, CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd are leading this transition, deploying these advanced vessels across key trade routes connecting ports like Singapore, Rotterdam, and Shanghai to meet decarbonization targets by 2050.
This rapid fleet expansion necessitates strict adherence to the IGF Code, which provides the international standard for ships using low-flashpoint fuels. Compliance departments must ensure that operational procedures align with MARPOL Annex VI requirements regarding nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide emissions. Furthermore, classification society rules from DNV and Lloyd’s Register now mandate rigorous safety management systems for bunkering LNG, methanol, or ammonia. Failure to integrate these specific SOLAS Chapter II-1 safety requirements into daily vessel operations poses significant risks to both crew safety and regulatory certification.
For chief engineers and second engineers, this transition demands a fundamental shift in technical expertise. These rank groups must now master complex fuel management systems, including cryogenic storage for LNG or specialized handling for methanol. Beyond routine maintenance, they must undergo mandatory training on fuel-specific safety protocols and emergency response procedures. Staying updated on these dual-fuel technologies is no longer optional for senior engine room personnel aiming to remain competitive in the modern merchant navy.
