HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering has significantly bolstered its 2024 order book by securing contracts worth 2.13 trillion won for eight new vessels. The deal includes six high-capacity container ships and two very large gas carriers (VLGCs), with the container vessels alone valued at 1.7787 trillion won. These orders, finalized on the 8th, reflect a robust demand for modern, energy-efficient tonnage, further cementing the shipbuilder's dominant position in the global maritime market and signaling sustained growth for the industry.

The construction of these advanced container ships and VLGCs must strictly adhere to the IMO’s MARPOL Annex VI regulations concerning sulfur emissions and the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirements. Furthermore, these vessels will be built to comply with SOLAS Chapter II-1 standards regarding ship construction and machinery installations. Classification societies will enforce rigorous safety protocols to ensure these new builds meet the latest International Gas Carrier (IGC) Code, which is essential for maintaining operational compliance and ensuring the safety of the crew during global transit.

For masters and navigating officers, these new builds represent a shift toward highly automated bridge systems and complex cargo management interfaces. Chief engineers and second engineers must prepare for advanced dual-fuel propulsion systems and stricter environmental monitoring protocols. Seafarers assigned to these vessels should prioritize familiarization with updated ballast water management systems and digital navigation suites, ensuring they remain proficient in operating the latest maritime technology to maintain optimal vessel performance and regulatory compliance.
