Not All Bunkers Are Equal, And Neither Are the Additives

The demulsifier that resolves a distillate water-in-fuel emulsion cleanly and quickly may have no appreciable effect on an HFO emulsion stabilised by viscoelastic asphaltene-resin film! In recent years the maritime...

Recent reports from gCaptain highlight that bunker fuel quality remains a critical challenge for modern shipping, as demulsifiers often fail to address water-in-fuel emulsions in Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO). Unlike distillate fuels, HFO emulsions are frequently stabilized by viscoelastic asphaltene-resin films, rendering standard chemical treatments ineffective. As vessels bunkering in major hubs like Singapore or Fujairah encounter increasingly complex fuel blends, the inability to resolve these emulsions can lead to severe engine performance degradation and potential power loss at sea.

This technical challenge directly intersects with the International Maritime Organization’s MARPOL Annex VI regulations regarding fuel quality and safety. Under SOLAS Chapter II-2, Regulation 4, ship operators are strictly mandated to ensure that fuel oil is free from hazardous contaminants that could jeopardize vessel safety. Compliance departments must recognize that generic additives are insufficient for modern fuel chemistry. Failing to address these stable emulsions risks non-compliance during Port State Control inspections and may lead to catastrophic machinery failure, necessitating rigorous fuel testing protocols and specialized additive selection.

Chief engineers and second engineers must prioritize advanced fuel analysis and compatibility testing before bunkering operations. These technical officers should move away from 'one-size-fits-all' additive strategies and instead consult with fuel chemists to identify demulsifiers specifically engineered for asphaltene-rich HFO. Understanding the rheological properties of bunker fuel is now essential for maintaining engine reliability and avoiding costly fuel system maintenance, ensuring that the vessel remains operational and compliant with international maritime standards.
