UAE Will Double Oil Export Capacity Bypassing Hormuz by 2027

The United Arab Emirates will double its capacity to export crude oil bypassing the Strait of Hormuz by next year, as it seeks to reduce reliance on the shipping chokepoint.
The United Arab Emirates is set to double its crude oil export capacity by 2027, significantly reducing reliance on the Strait of Hormuz. By expanding the Habshan-Fujairah pipeline, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) aims to bypass the strategic chokepoint, ensuring smoother logistics for VLCCs and Suezmax tankers calling at the Port of Fujairah. This infrastructure shift provides a vital alternative for global energy security, mitigating risks associated with regional geopolitical tensions that frequently impact transit schedules and insurance premiums.
From an operational standpoint, this transition aligns with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines regarding the security of maritime trade routes and the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. While bypassing the Strait reduces exposure to specific regional threats, vessels must remain compliant with MARPOL Annex I regarding oil discharge prevention during loading operations at Fujairah. Compliance departments must update voyage planning protocols to reflect these new terminal capacities, ensuring that all safety management systems adhere to the latest OCIMF guidelines for terminal interface.
Masters and navigating officers must prepare for revised voyage planning and increased traffic density near the Fujairah anchorage. These ranks should prioritize updated electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) data for the expanded terminal approaches. Furthermore, deck officers must ensure that mooring operations and ship-to-shore communications are optimized for the new export infrastructure, as increased throughput will demand higher precision during cargo handling and strict adherence to port-specific safety protocols for large crude carriers.
