Smart ships’ are failing to turn data into real intelligence, warns SmartSea

The maritime industry’s ambitious transition toward smart shipping is hitting a significant roadblock, as reported by technology firm SmartSea. While global fleets have invested heavily in IoT sensors, AI-driven analytics, and high-speed onboard connectivity, many vessels are struggling to convert raw data into actionable intelligence. This operational gap persists despite the deployment of advanced monitoring systems across major shipping lanes from Singapore to Rotterdam, leaving shipowners with vast data silos that fail to optimize vessel performance or fuel efficiency.
This data management failure complicates compliance with the IMO’s MARPOL Annex VI, which mandates strict energy efficiency standards such as the EEXI and CII ratings. Under SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 18, the integrity of navigational and operational data is paramount for safety management systems. Classification societies like DNV and Lloyd’s Register increasingly require robust digital reporting to verify emissions data. Without effective data processing, vessels risk non-compliance, potential port state control detentions, and failing to meet the stringent decarbonization targets set by international maritime regulators.
For chief engineers and second engineers, this technological shortfall creates a critical burden in managing engine room performance and predictive maintenance. These officers must shift their focus from merely collecting sensor readings to mastering data interpretation tools. They need to prioritize verifying the accuracy of automated logs against manual observations to ensure compliance. Moving forward, technical teams must demand better user interfaces from software providers to transform complex data streams into reliable, real-time decision-making support.
