GAC has issued a critical maritime alert regarding the Port of Lome, Togo, where the primary oil jetty is scheduled to be out of service starting 27 May 2026. This operational disruption is expected to persist until 7 June 2026, forcing a significant shift in logistics. Vessels arriving at the port are being redirected to the ore wharf to maintain cargo flow. Notably, port authorities have indicated that vessels refusing double-banking operations will not receive priority berthing during this period.

This port closure necessitates strict adherence to SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 34, which mandates safe navigation and passage planning, particularly when dealing with altered berthing arrangements. Compliance departments must ensure that Masters and bridge teams review the International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines regarding ship-to-ship transfers and double-banking safety protocols. Failure to align with these port-specific requirements could lead to significant delays or potential liability issues under the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, as vessel operators must demonstrate due diligence in navigating these temporary infrastructure constraints.

Masters and navigating officers must immediately update their voyage plans and coordinate closely with local agents to manage expectations regarding the ore wharf transition. Given the lack of priority for those declining double-banking, deck officers must prepare for complex mooring configurations. It is essential for the bridge team to conduct thorough risk assessments and ensure that all mooring equipment is prepared for non-standard berthing conditions to avoid unnecessary port stay extensions during this maintenance window.
