Japanese Shipping Giant MOL Signs First Annual LNG Bunkering Deal For Car Carriers
22 May 2026

MOL will continue to expand the service areas for LNG-fueled vessels and proactively support the growth of a clean supply chain.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has officially signed its first annual LNG bunkering agreement for its fleet of LNG-fueled car carriers. This strategic move, executed in collaboration with major energy suppliers, marks a significant milestone in decarbonizing maritime logistics. By securing a consistent supply chain for liquefied natural gas, MOL aims to bolster the operational efficiency of its dual-fuel vessels. This initiative underscores the company's proactive commitment to expanding service areas for cleaner shipping operations across major global trade routes.
The transition to LNG as a primary marine fuel necessitates strict adherence to the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code), which complements the SOLAS Chapter II-1 requirements. Furthermore, compliance with MARPOL Annex VI regarding sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions remains critical for vessel operations. Classification societies, such as ClassNK or DNV, now mandate rigorous bunkering procedures and gas-handling protocols to ensure safety. Compliance departments must ensure that all onboard safety management systems are updated to reflect these complex regulatory and environmental standards.
This shift toward LNG bunkering directly impacts the responsibilities of chief engineers and second engineers. These engine room officers must undergo specialized training for gas-fueled propulsion systems, focusing on cryogenic fuel handling and emergency response protocols. Navigating officers must also familiarize themselves with updated bunkering checklists and port-specific safety zones. Adapting to these technical requirements is essential for maintaining vessel safety, ensuring regulatory compliance, and advancing professional competency within the evolving landscape of modern, sustainable merchant shipping.
