Air cargo squeezed between AI boom and helium supply crisis

19 May 2026

The biggest growth sector in air cargo could face significant challenges if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed. The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is creating a new, and largely overlooked, risk for global supply chains: helium shortages. As hyperscalers race to build data centres and deploy

The global air cargo sector faces a dual threat as the AI infrastructure boom clashes with a critical helium supply crisis. With the Strait of Hormuz remaining a volatile chokepoint, logistics chains are under immense pressure. Hyperscalers like Microsoft and Google are aggressively expanding data centers, consuming vast quantities of helium for cooling systems. This surge in demand, coupled with potential maritime transit disruptions near the Persian Gulf, threatens to destabilize supply routes vital for high-tech components and urgent maritime equipment.

From a regulatory perspective, the transport of pressurized gases and hazardous materials falls strictly under the IMDG Code, specifically Class 2.2 for non-flammable, non-toxic gases. Compliance departments must ensure that vessels carrying helium cylinders adhere to SOLAS Chapter VII, Part A, which governs the carriage of dangerous goods. Any deviation from these safety standards during transit through high-risk zones like the Strait of Hormuz could lead to severe detention by Port State Control, jeopardizing both the crew and the integrity of the global supply chain.

Chief engineers and second engineers must prioritize the monitoring of specialized cargo handling systems and gas containment protocols. As helium becomes a strategic commodity, these officers must ensure that all stowage plans comply with the vessel’s Document of Compliance for the carriage of dangerous goods. Accurate reporting of hazardous cargo manifests is essential to avoid delays, as increased scrutiny on helium shipments will likely lead to more frequent inspections at major global transshipment hubs.
