Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) recently hosted a high-level delegation from Nepal’s Consulate General, led by Consul General Jhakka Prasad Acharya, to strengthen cross-border maritime logistics. Chairperson Shri Gaurav Dayal, IAS, showcased the port’s state-of-the-art infrastructure, emphasizing the strategic importance of the upcoming Vadhvan Port project for landlocked Nepal. This diplomatic engagement aims to streamline transit trade via Indian ports, potentially increasing container throughput and vessel calls at JNPA, which remains a critical gateway for regional maritime connectivity and economic growth.

The expansion of Indo-Nepal trade routes necessitates strict adherence to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic (FAL Convention). Compliance departments must ensure that all documentation aligns with the ISPS Code requirements for port facility security and the SOLAS Chapter XI-2 regulations governing maritime safety. Furthermore, managing the increased cargo volume requires rigorous compliance with MARPOL Annex VI regarding emission standards for vessels calling at JNPA. Proper integration of these regulatory frameworks is essential to prevent operational delays and ensure seamless intermodal logistics for transit cargo.

Navigating officers and masters must prepare for increased traffic density and complex berthing schedules as trade volumes between India and Nepal grow. These professionals should focus on maintaining precise electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) updates and ensuring strict adherence to port-specific safety protocols during cargo operations. Staying informed about updated customs documentation and transit procedures at JNPA is vital for maintaining operational efficiency and avoiding potential regulatory bottlenecks during the transit of goods to Nepal.
