The Medical Guide (MMG) App, a vital digital resource for maritime health, has received a critical update incorporating comprehensive guidance on Hantavirus. Developed through a collaboration between Gard and the Norwegian Centre for Maritime and Diving Medicine, this tool assists seafarers in managing complex medical scenarios at sea. As vessels operate across global trade routes, including major hubs like Singapore and Rotterdam, having immediate, offline-accessible medical protocols for zoonotic diseases is essential for maintaining crew welfare and operational continuity.

Under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006), shipowners are strictly mandated to ensure that all seafarers have access to high-quality medical care and health protection while onboard. The integration of Hantavirus protocols into the MMG App aligns with the health and safety requirements outlined in SOLAS Chapter IV regarding radiomedical services and the International Medical Guide for Ships. Compliance departments must recognize that updated digital medical resources are no longer optional but are critical for mitigating legal risks and ensuring that the vessel remains compliant with international health standards during port state control inspections.

Masters and navigating officers bear the primary responsibility for ensuring that the ship’s medical chest and digital resources remain current. These officers must immediately download the latest MMG App update to ensure they are prepared to identify Hantavirus symptoms during routine medical screenings. By integrating this guidance into the onboard safety management system, the command team can effectively manage potential outbreaks, protect the health of the crew, and ensure the vessel avoids unnecessary medical diversions or quarantine delays.
