Software providers DAKOSY and dbh have officially completed the digitalization of container releases across all German North Sea ports, including Hamburg, Bremerhaven, and Wilhelmshaven. By implementing Secure Release Orders via the German Ports IT platform, the project streamlines logistics for merchant vessels calling at these major hubs. This transition replaces legacy paper-based processes with a unified digital interface, significantly reducing administrative bottlenecks for cargo operations and enhancing the overall efficiency of container handling for global shipping lines.
This digitalization initiative aligns with the IMO’s Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic (FAL) Convention, which mandates the use of electronic data exchange to simplify ship-port interface procedures. Furthermore, it supports the digitalization requirements under SOLAS Chapter XI-2 regarding port facility security and information integrity. By automating the release process, shipping companies ensure better compliance with international data standards, reducing the risk of manual errors and unauthorized cargo access, which is critical for maintaining operational security and regulatory adherence during port stays.
For masters and navigating officers, this shift means moving away from traditional paper documentation toward integrated digital verification systems. These officers must ensure that their bridge and cargo teams are familiar with the new electronic release protocols to avoid delays during port clearance. By mastering these digital platforms, navigating officers can expedite cargo operations, minimize turnaround times, and ensure seamless communication with terminal operators, ultimately improving the efficiency of vessel port calls in Germany.
