The Future of Shipping 2026: Greece is the Authentic & Visionary leader says KPMG Study

A recent KPMG study positions Greece as the definitive visionary leader for the future of global shipping by 2026. As the industry navigates a complex transformation, Greece leverages its massive fleet capacity to influence trade and energy balances. With 87% of global merchandise transported by sea, Greek shipowners are spearheading investments in sustainable tonnage, including dual-fuel bulk carriers and LNG-powered tankers. This strategic shift reinforces the Piraeus port hub as a central node for international maritime logistics and technological innovation.

The transition toward a greener maritime future is heavily dictated by the IMO’s MARPOL Annex VI regulations, which mandate strict limits on sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. Compliance departments must now align vessel operations with the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) requirements under SOLAS Chapter II-1. Furthermore, adherence to the MLC 2006 standards remains critical for maintaining crew welfare during this period of rapid fleet modernization. These regulatory frameworks ensure that operational efficiency does not compromise safety or environmental stewardship on the high seas.

This shift significantly impacts the daily responsibilities of masters and navigating officers, who must now master advanced digital navigation systems and energy-efficient voyage planning. These officers are required to undergo specialized training to manage new propulsion technologies and complex emission monitoring protocols. By staying updated on these technical advancements, senior deck officers ensure their vessels remain compliant with evolving international standards while maintaining peak operational performance in an increasingly digitized and environmentally conscious maritime sector.
