Value Maritime has officially partnered with Neptune Lines to retrofit two pure car carrier vessels with its advanced Filtree system. This innovative technology functions as an emission-reducing SOx scrubber that is also carbon capture ready, marking a significant step in sustainable maritime operations. By integrating this solution, Neptune Lines aims to enhance the environmental performance of its European short-sea fleet. This collaboration highlights the industry-wide shift toward greener shipping technologies to meet evolving global maritime emission standards effectively.
The implementation of the Filtree system directly addresses compliance requirements under MARPOL Annex VI, which mandates strict limits on sulfur oxide emissions from ship exhausts. For maritime operations and compliance departments, this retrofit ensures vessels remain aligned with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonization trajectory and the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) framework. By adopting carbon capture ready technology, operators proactively mitigate risks associated with future environmental regulations, ensuring long-term fleet viability and operational continuity within increasingly stringent European emission control areas.
For chief engineers and second engineers, this installation introduces new maintenance protocols for the Filtree scrubber unit and its associated carbon capture infrastructure. Engine room personnel must familiarize themselves with the automated filtration processes and chemical dosing systems required for optimal performance. Understanding the integration of these scrubbers into existing exhaust gas systems is essential for maintaining compliance during port state control inspections and ensuring the technical reliability of the vessel’s propulsion plant during daily operations.
