Zodiac Maritime has strengthened its position in the car carrier sector with a fresh order for two LNG dual-fuel car carriers in China. Zodiac Maritime has significantly expanded its footprint in the automotive logistics sector by placing a fresh order for two 7,000 ceu LNG dual-fuel car carriers at Yantai CIMC Raffles in China. Scheduled for delivery in 2028, these vessels underscore the London-based owner’s commitment to modernizing its fleet with environmentally friendly tonnage. This strategic investment highlights a growing industry trend toward dual-fuel propulsion systems, ensuring that Zodiac Maritime remains a dominant force in global vehicle transportation and maritime supply chain efficiency.

The integration of LNG dual-fuel technology is a direct response to stringent IMO 2023 regulations, specifically focusing on the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII). These vessels must adhere to the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code), which mandates rigorous safety protocols for bunkering and fuel storage. Compliance departments must ensure that these newbuilds meet the latest MARPOL Annex VI requirements regarding nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide emissions, effectively future-proofing the fleet against evolving environmental standards.

This transition to LNG-powered car carriers will specifically impact chief engineers and second engineers who will require specialized training in cryogenic fuel handling and gas combustion management. These officers must familiarize themselves with the specific safety management systems required under the IGF Code. Furthermore, navigating officers will need to adapt to new bunkering procedures and gas-detection monitoring systems, ensuring that all operations remain compliant with the latest classification society requirements for dual-fuel vessel safety and environmental performance.
