ENGINE: Europe & Africa Bunker Fuel Availability Outlook

27 May 2026

Northwest Europe VLSFO and HSFO availability is tightening in the ARA bunkering hub, with buyers advised to book stems around 10 days in advance to get competitive offers from a wide selection of suppliers, a trader told ENGINE. LSMGO is available more readily and needs a notice of around 5-6 days,

Northwest Europe is currently experiencing a tightening supply of VLSFO and HSFO within the critical ARA bunkering hub, impacting vessel scheduling across the region. Traders report that securing competitive fuel stems now requires a lead time of approximately 10 days to ensure optimal supplier selection. While LSMGO remains more readily accessible with a 5-6 day notice period, maritime operators must adjust their voyage planning accordingly to mitigate potential delays and avoid inflated procurement costs in these key European ports.

This supply volatility necessitates strict adherence to MARPOL Annex VI regulations, which mandate the use of compliant low-sulfur fuels to meet global emission standards. Compliance departments must ensure that bunker delivery notes are meticulously documented to satisfy Port State Control inspections under SOLAS Chapter II-2 requirements. Failure to secure compliant fuel in a timely manner can lead to non-conformity reports during classification society audits, potentially jeopardizing a vessel’s operational certification and increasing the risk of heavy financial penalties for non-compliant emissions.

Chief engineers and second engineers must prioritize proactive bunker planning to navigate these supply constraints effectively. It is essential to communicate fuel requirements to shore-based management well in advance of arrival at ARA ports. By adjusting fuel management strategies and ensuring accurate tank sounding records, engine room teams can maintain operational efficiency and avoid the risks associated with last-minute procurement or the use of non-standard fuel grades during critical voyage legs.
