Maritime industry challenges: what the next decade holds
13 May 2026

The maritime industry is the backbone of global trade, responsible for transporting nearly 90% of the world’s goods. From raw materials to finished products, shipping connects economies, supports industries, and enables globalization at scale. However, as we move into the next decade, the industry i
The maritime industry, which facilitates 90% of global trade, faces a transformative decade defined by rapid technological shifts and sustainability mandates. As major shipping lines like Maersk and MSC integrate greener fleets, Indian seafarers must navigate evolving operational landscapes at key hubs like Mundra Port and JNPT. With the industry moving toward decarbonization and digitalization, the next ten years will require a fundamental reassessment of traditional shipping logistics, fleet management, and the integration of autonomous systems across global supply chains.
Compliance with the IMO’s MARPOL Annex VI remains the primary driver of operational change, specifically regarding the reduction of sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides. Furthermore, SOLAS Chapter XI-2 and the ISPS Code continue to dictate rigorous security protocols, while the MLC 2006 regulation ensures the welfare and working conditions of crew members are strictly maintained. Classification societies like DNV and Lloyd’s Register are enforcing stricter requirements for Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) compliance, forcing technical departments to prioritize vessel efficiency and carbon intensity reporting.
These regulatory shifts directly impact the daily responsibilities of chief engineers and second engineers. These officers must now master advanced fuel management systems, including LNG bunkering and exhaust gas cleaning technologies. To remain competitive, they must prioritize obtaining certification in low-carbon fuel handling and digital monitoring systems. Adapting to these technical requirements is essential for maintaining vessel compliance and ensuring career progression as the global fleet transitions toward a greener, more automated future.
