TFG Marine conduct first-ever e-BDN trial in Mauritius

19 May 2026

TFG Marine carried out a trial of an electronic bunker delivery note (e-BDN) during a bunkering operation in Port Louis, Mauritius. An e-BDN is a digital version of the standard BDN that records key details such as the quantity, grade and sulphur content of the fuel supplied. This was the first use

TFG Marine has successfully completed the first-ever electronic bunker delivery note (e-BDN) trial at Port Louis, Mauritius, marking a significant milestone in maritime digitalization. By transitioning from traditional paper-based documentation to a secure digital format, the operation streamlined the recording of essential fuel data, including precise quantity, fuel grade, and sulphur content. This innovative pilot project demonstrates a shift toward paperless bunkering, enhancing transparency and operational efficiency for vessel operators navigating the busy Indian Ocean maritime corridors.

The adoption of e-BDNs aligns with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) ongoing efforts to digitize maritime trade and simplify administrative burdens under MARPOL Annex VI, which regulates air pollution from ships. By digitizing the bunker delivery note, companies ensure better compliance with sulphur emission limits and fuel quality standards mandated by the IMO 2020 regulation. This digital transition helps compliance departments maintain accurate, tamper-proof records, significantly reducing the risk of human error during fuel transfers and simplifying the verification process during Port State Control inspections.

For masters and chief engineers, the shift to e-BDNs means moving away from manual paperwork toward integrated digital logging systems. These officers must familiarize themselves with the specific software platforms used for digital authentication to ensure seamless fuel receipt verification. By adopting these digital workflows, masters and chief engineers can expedite bunkering operations, reduce administrative downtime, and ensure that all fuel-related documentation remains fully compliant with international maritime standards during future port calls.
