Knutsen stacks LNG orderbook higher with Hanwha Ocean deal

12 May 2026

Norwegian shipowner Knutsen Group is being linked to another LNG carrier order at South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean, further expanding one of the industry’s largest long-term backed LNG orderbooks. The South Korean shipbuilder said on Monday it had secured a contract worth KRW363.2bn ($250.3m) for one LNG

Norwegian shipowner Knutsen Group has further solidified its dominance in the energy transport sector by placing a new order for a high-specification LNG carrier with Hanwha Ocean. Valued at approximately KRW363.2bn, or $250.3m, this contract adds to an already extensive orderbook for the South Korean shipyard. As global demand for liquefied natural gas remains robust, Knutsen continues to expand its fleet, ensuring long-term charter security while leveraging advanced shipbuilding technology to maintain operational efficiency across international trade routes.

The construction of these modern LNG carriers must strictly adhere to the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk, known as the IGC Code. Furthermore, compliance with MARPOL Annex VI regarding nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide emissions remains a critical operational priority for newbuilds. Classification societies, such as DNV or Lloyd’s Register, enforce these rigorous standards to ensure structural integrity and environmental safety. For compliance departments, maintaining these certifications is essential for securing port state control clearances and avoiding costly detentions during global operations.

This expansion directly impacts the career prospects for chief engineers and second engineers tasked with managing sophisticated dual-fuel propulsion systems. These senior officers must undergo specialized training in cryogenic cargo handling and high-pressure gas management systems. Staying updated with the latest LNG containment technologies and safety protocols is vital for career progression, as these advanced vessels require highly skilled technical leadership to ensure safe and efficient operations throughout their service life.
