Sustainable shipping without the spin

While the maritime sector often expresses its commitment to the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO’s) Net Zero ambitions and 2030/2050 targets, rhetoric and reality also frequently diverge. In many respects, our sector is a laggard among global industries where emissions are concerned and ne
The maritime industry faces a widening gap between ambitious IMO Net Zero targets and actual operational decarbonization. While shipping giants like Maersk and MSC integrate dual-fuel vessels into fleets, the broader sector lags behind global emission reduction benchmarks. Achieving the 2030 and 2050 climate goals requires moving beyond corporate rhetoric toward tangible fuel transitions and energy efficiency. For Indian merchant navy officers, navigating this shift toward sustainable shipping is no longer optional but a critical requirement for future-proofing maritime careers.
Compliance with MARPOL Annex VI remains the primary regulatory driver for vessel operations, specifically regarding the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII). These mandates, enforced under the IMO’s regulatory framework, require rigorous monitoring of fuel oil consumption data and annual efficiency reporting. Classification societies now demand stricter adherence to these standards, impacting vessel management systems and long-term maintenance schedules. Failure to align with these technical requirements risks vessel detention and significant commercial penalties, placing immense pressure on onboard compliance documentation and reporting accuracy.
Chief engineers and second engineers are at the forefront of this technical transition. These rank groups must master the operation of alternative fuel systems, including LNG, methanol, and ammonia-ready engines. Beyond technical proficiency, they must ensure precise bunker delivery note management and emissions data logging to satisfy port state control inspections. Adapting to these evolving green technologies is essential for maintaining vessel performance and ensuring professional relevance in an increasingly decarbonized global merchant fleet.
